Morning Session. The Legacy of Socialism in the Lives and Identities of Older Persons in Europe.
Venue: Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom, Add. Toompea 8
Europe has a history of silence when it comes to the times of totalitarian and socialist systems. But there are many Europeans whose lives and youth these experiences have affected. Condemning the past results in hiding one’s identities and both the good and the bad experiences about the past. Every society and political system has an ordinary everyday life and family stories that can be well remembered, as any older person remembers. By the culture of silence, we tend to ignore those memories.
In this session, we will dive into the identities and lives of people who come from Soviet times. At the Annual Meeting, we will discuss the impact of the Cold War’s divided Europe and the tradition of socialism, the identity of the East and the West. The goal is to familiarize our network members to recognize what a Post-Soviet identity is, and how it lives in older people. We’ll have discussions and ideas from ENIEC members’ own experiences as well as connection to our work with minority older persons.
Afternoon session. ENIEC members recognizing social identities of older people in minorities
Venue: National Library of Estonia, Add. Tõnismägi 2
During this session, we would like to share our experiences on how to develop Intercultural Elderly Services in Diverse Contexts: what our challenges are when we work with older adults from ethnic minorities and with migrant backgrounds. How we interpreted the legacy of the cultural contexts in the construction of their identities and how we interpret them in our working lives. During this afternoon we would also like to discuss how the polarization of modern-day Europe affects our work with old migrants and with older adults from minorities as well as the dilemmas in intercultural care, culture-sensitive work and diversity. In addition, we will talk about how the past affects the way older people’s rights are interpreted in different countries. We’ll dive in to discussions of what have we learned through the discussions of the day and by sharing our knowledge with other members.

Closing session – Increasing the Power of ENIEC. What do we learn from each other about cooperation?. Case: The Dementia Conference in Narva 2019. How ENIEC has influenced on the dementia work in Estonia? Open discussion about the Power of the ENIEC network.
