In March 2011, ENIEC held its Annual Meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden. A total of 65 members attended, a record number. The Swedish organising committee hosted an interactive event that included both a first evaluation since ENIEC’s establishment and an exchange of ideas about the network’s future. Naturally, there were also inspiring presentations and field visits to various organisations.
The meeting took place in Angered, located in the north-eastern part of Gothenburg, one of the city’s multicultural suburbs. Angered had around 50,000 inhabitants in those years from many different backgrounds. Although the population was generally young, there are also many elderly migrants living in the district.
Presentations were given by, among others, Gerdt Sundström, Professor Emeritus of Social Work at the Institute of Gerontology, School of Health Sciences in Jönköping, who spoke on “Ageing in the Nordic countries for native nationals and immigrants: similar but different.” Another keynote was delivered by Barbro Westerholm, Member of Parliament and former government official, on “The Swedish welfare system for the elderly: legislation, responsibilities and financing.” The meeting was officially opened by Babbs Edberg, Director of Elderly Care in Angered.
The organising committee consisted of Merja Heed, Houda El Machharawi, Nubar Kino, Eva Ternegren, Haklime Hassan and Ria Lidén. Margareta Ivehammar supported the team from Halmstad, and Gittan Ekvall and Jenny Malmsten from Malmö.
