The Situation of Migrant caregivers in Finland

The Association of Carers in Helsinki and Vantaa-Kerava / Omaisneuvo-activity is launching a study that delves into the situation of migrant caregivers in Finland. This study, which addresses the specific needs, challenges, and accessibility of services for migrant carers, has not been conducted previously in Finland. The electronic article collection, which we hope to be completed by early next year, aims to amplify the voices of migrant caregivers and strengthen their position in Finnish society.

The goal is to provide expert, practical information that will be valuable to professionals, experts, policymakers, and the public. The collection focuses on how multicultural caregivers experience the challenges they face in their daily lives and the types of services they need to improve their quality of life and ensure their rights are fully realized.

The study will cover several aspects, including the number of migrant caregivers in Finland, their backgrounds, cultural specifics, and motivations for becoming carers. It will also examine the daily challenges faced by carers, such as physical and mental strain, social isolation, and cultural barriers to accessing services.

A particular focus will be on the structural problems within the service system and the need for culturally sensitive services, which would improve migrant caregivers’ quality of life and social inclusion.

This work represents an important step towards better-targeted and more inclusive support for migrant family carers in Finland. We are also highly interested in hearing about the experiences and practices in other European countries regarding this issue. If anyone from the ENIEC network has completed writings or research on the situation of migrant caregivers in other European countries, it would be a great help and contribute to a broader understanding for this study.

We warmly welcome experts, researchers, and all interested parties to participate and contribute their expertise to this important and timely study.
