The ENIEC Annual Meeting, held this year in Nijmegen from April 9–11, 2025, was an enriching and inspiring experience. As one of the participants from across Europe, I found myself immersed in a vibrant exchange of ideas, experiences, and innovative solutions aimed at improving elder care for older migrants and ethnic minorities. This meeting reinforced my belief in the transformative power of collaboration and cultural sensitivity in shaping a more equitable future.
The Power of Shared Learning in Smart Housing for Older Adults
ENIEC’s strength lies in its ability to bring together professionals from diverse fields—social care, nursing, policy, research, and beyond—and create a space where mutual learning thrives. One of the most insightful moments of the recent meeting was the Smart House workshop, which focused on the development of housing solutions for elderly individuals, particularly for those living alone.
The workshop highlighted how technology can be used to create safer, more supportive environments for older adults. We explored innovative ideas on how to design apartments and homes that not only accommodate the physical needs of aging individuals but also promote their independence and well-being. These solutions included smart technologies that assist with daily tasks, enhance security, and provide a sense of connection for those who may be isolated.
What stood out to me most was the emphasis on creating environments that respect the dignity and autonomy of older adults. By integrating technology with person-centered care, we can create living spaces that adapt to the evolving needs of the elderly, ensuring that they can continue to live independently for as long as possible.
This workshop left a lasting impression on me, demonstrating how innovation, when combined with empathy and inclusivity, can truly transform the lives of older individuals. It also reinforced the importance of cross-border collaboration in addressing the shared challenges faced by aging populations across Europe.
ENIEC: A Community Rooted in Purpose
Beyond its role as a professional network, ENIEC feels like a true community. It is a place where ideas emerge, friendships are formed, and collective responsibility takes center stage. The annual meeting is not just about exchanging knowledge about building connections that transcend geographical boundaries and professional disciplines.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the meeting was witnessing the genuine commitment of ENIEC members to improving the lives of older people from ethnic minorities. Whether through research, advocacy, or hands-on caregiving, everyone present shared a common vision: ensuring that every older adult, regardless of their background, has access to equitable care and opportunities to thrive.
Looking Ahead with Hope
As I reflect on my experience in Nijmegen, I am filled with gratitude for being part of such a meaningful network. ENIEC has deepened my understanding of the complexities and opportunities within elder care, particularly for older migrants. It has also reinforced my belief in the importance of viewing elder care through a lens of diversity and inclusion.
The meeting left me hopeful for the future. With networks like ENIEC fostering collaboration and driving innovation, I am confident that we can create systems of care that honor the dignity and humanity of all older adults. Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind in our increasingly interconnected world.
In closing, the 2025 ENIEC Annual Meeting was a testament to the power of unity and shared purpose. It reminded me that, despite our differences, we are all working toward the same goal: a better, more inclusive future for older adults across Europe. I am proud to be part of this journey and look forward to seeing how ENIEC continues to inspire change in the years to come.
