Area of work:

I am now retired, but I worked more than 50 years in the world of managing the integration of several migrants in the Netherlands. Especialy the different etnic groups from Surinam, who came to Holland before the independence in 1975. I do that by way of course of Emancipation, Participation to Integration.

Specific field of expertise:

My approach was always respectable and equivalent.

The Government was happy with this approach and ask me to do that alsof for the migrant workers, such as the Turkish, the Maroccons and the Cape Verdians.

I do that on two manners:

  1. By making the migrants self handy (give them information and help them find their way to public health and  civil services).
  2. By making general institutions and public institutions more cultural sensitive (organise several workshops about care, well being and communication).

Type of work:

In 2006 I intent to retire, but again the Government ask me to organise the elder migrants to help them to take care of their old days. The Government has failed to organise their retirement and other assistance. In 2007 I set up a new foundation in cooperation with the existing elderly unions in the Netherlands. Nowadays NOOM is a important interrogator for all migrants in the Netherlands.

What does ENIEC mean to you or your work?:

As a member of ENIEC I love to exchange my ideas and sharing my experiences with all the members of all over Europe.

As an interculturalisation specialist, I worked as a connector between people, communities and cultures. I focused on bringing together diverse groups of older people with a migration background and on recognising and valuing their knowledge and lived experience, so that this could contribute to society as a whole.

I also supported health and social care organisations in developing culturally responsive and inclusive practices, enabling them to better understand and meet the needs, preferences and experiences of older people from diverse backgrounds.

I am now retired, but I remain regularly active in this field. My areas of expertise included interculturalisation in health and social care, inclusive practice, and diversity management.
