Haags Ontmoeten: A Growing Network for Vulnerable Seniors in The Hague

Since its establishment in 2017, Haags Ontmoeten (The Hague Gatherings) has developed into a valuable link in The Hague’s social infrastructure. What began as a small initiative to connect independently living elderly residents has grown into a network of over 62 locations throughout the city. This success story is attributed to the involvement of the Municipality of The Hague, various care and welfare partners, and foundations. The increasing demand for meeting places for independently living seniors, especially among vulnerable groups such as migrant seniors and their caregivers, has also played a significant role.

Growth and Development

The growth of Haags Ontmoeten is remarkable. In recent years, we have not only increased the number of locations but also expanded the diversity of activities offered. This has resulted in a rich variety of meetings, workshops, and social activities, all tailored to the needs of the seniors in each neighbourhood.

The involvement of local organisations, volunteers, and the Municipality of The Hague has made this growth possible. Together, we work toward an inclusive society where everyone can participate and feel welcome.

The past year was filled with significant developments and highlights, such as the creation of dementia-friendly Haags Ontmoeten locations. This initiative, set to be further expanded in 2025, addresses the growing need for suitable meeting places for people with dementia and their loved ones. By adapting these locations and training staff in dementia-friendly practices, we aim to ensure that everyone feels safe and understood.

Additionally, Haags Ontmoeten participated in the Regional Tour of the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS). This participation not only increased the visibility of our initiative but also provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in senior care. Our presence at the ZorgSaamWonen (founded by Yvonne Witter) conference in The Hague further enabled us to share our vision and network with other key professionals in the field.

Caregiver Project: Connecting with Migrant Seniors

An important aspect of our work is the caregiver project, which focuses on establishing active connections with mosques and key figures in the community. This project, which is being carried out alongside Haags Ontmoeten, aims to engage not only migrant seniors but also migrant caregivers—a group often overlooked in elderly care.

By building trust within these communities, we have been able to better identify migrant caregivers through their trusted networks. The impact of this project is significant. Collaborating with mosques and key figures has not only increased the visibility of migrant caregivers but also enhanced their knowledge and expertise. This has led to better support for migrant seniors and their caregivers, which is essential for their well-being.

The success of this project demonstrates that fostering connections within the community yields positive results. Sharing experiences and information between migrant seniors and their caregivers has proven to be crucial.

Focus on Migrant Seniors in 2025

In 2025, we aim to further focus on identifying and supporting migrant seniors in The Hague. This group is often underrepresented in social initiatives and has specific needs that are not always recognised.

Through targeted outreach and collaboration with cultural organisations and communities, we aim to better reach these seniors and provide them with a sense of belonging. We plan to develop special programs and activities that align with their cultural backgrounds and life stories. This could range from cultural exchanges to shared meals and events celebrating their traditions.

By creating an environment where they can relate to others and feel free to share their experiences, we hope to foster an inclusive community where everyone feels at home.

The Future of Haags Ontmoeten

Looking ahead, it is clear that the demand for meeting places for seniors will only continue to grow. With the aging population, it is crucial to address the needs of vulnerable groups, including migrant seniors and their caregivers.

Haags Ontmoeten is ambitious about further expanding its network and creating even more accessible and welcoming locations for everyone. As program coordinators of Haags Ontmoeten, we are proud of what we have achieved so far. The impact we make on the lives of seniors and their families is invaluable.
