On Friday, October 2, 2026, Rotterdam Delfshaven will host the second edition of the Buurtmakerscongres (Neighbourhood Makers Congress). Initiated by the Welzijnscoalitie Delfshaven, this event celebrates the ‘social basis’ of social communities in Rotterdam.
The inaugural edition in 2025 was a resounding success, bringing together over 200 visitors, including informal neighbourhood groups, NGOs, and city officials. The event was kicked off by the Mayor of Rotterdam, Carola Schouten, and street doctor Michelle van Tongerloo. The goal remains clear: to showcase neighbourhood hubs, honour community power, and celebrate the growth, impact, and connection that already exists.
Why a Buurtmakerscongres?
The government in The Netherlands increasingly relies on informal neighbourhood organisations. Rather than stepping back, these organisations are stepping up. This congress demonstrates their capability and why a strong social foundation is a smart investment. While last year was about awareness, 2026 is about action, or as they say in Rotterdam: “Geen woorden maar daden” (actions, not words).
This year, the congress aims to welcome 300 visitors and is deepening its collaboration with the Rotterdam Stadsmakerscongres. While the latter often focuses on urban planning, the Buurtmakerscongres serves as the ‘social practice’ side of the same coin.
What makes this congress unique?
Voices of the people: While other conferences prioritize academics and politicians, we hand the stage to ‘ordinary’ residents. They are the true experts from whom we have the most to learn.
Network-centric funding: We advocate for a shift in how social work is funded. Instead of short-term, fragmented projects, we demonstrate that investing in long-term networks creates the stability and trust necessary for real impact.
Under the slogan “Samen voor buurtkracht” (Together for neighbourhood power), we welcome everyone: formal and informal, grassroots and systemic, from all backgrounds. The program will be rich with interactive workshops, ‘do-it-yourself’ experiences, inspiring speakers, and, of course, excellent catering.
Please note: The congress will be held in Dutch. Ticket sales start in the summer of 2026. Keep an eye on www.welzijnscoalitie.nl for updates!
