What does it mean to age healthily?
For many older adults, it is about more than physical activity and physical health. It is also about social interaction, familiarity, and a sense of belonging. For ten years, Samen voor Ouderen met een Migratieachtergrond in Nederland (SOMNL) has been committed to making this possible. Through Sociaal Vitaal in Kleur Plus (SViK+), the organisation is working towards a future in which older adults with a migration background can age in good health, remain active, and stay connected to others.
What began as a culturally sensitive physical activity intervention has grown into a nationwide network in which more than 1,500 older adults take part in group activities and meet one another every week. The impact goes far beyond physical health. One participant from Rotterdam puts it aptly: “Being together with people like me, speaking the same language, and feeling that sense of familiarity — that is what matters to me.”
Trust as the foundation for lasting change
SViK+ demonstrates the importance of personal contact and tailoring activities to the everyday lives and experiences of older adults. Trained instructors, volunteers, and local coordinators build trust and encourage not only physical activity, but also social interaction and mutual support. This requires time, continuity, and collaboration.
These efforts are increasingly receiving long-term structural support. In Utrecht, 35 groups will receive support for four years, starting next year. In Rotterdam, municipal funding will make it possible for 50 groups to participate from 2026 onwards. Both municipalities have been supporting the programme for several years.
Building the future together
In the coming years, SOMNL aims to reach more older adults and expand the programme to include topics such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, vaccinations, and oral health. The ambition is clear: to make preventive care more accessible and contribute to equal opportunities for good health.
Ten years of experience provide a solid foundation for the next step. Because ageing healthily is also about participating in society, connecting with others, and feeling seen and valued. Through SViK+, SOMNL demonstrates that lasting change begins with people, their communities, and the power of togetherness.
